Travelling lets you see the world, explore new cultures and experience new things. It is also one of the most common causes of back pain.
Lifting heavy luggage, spending long periods of time sitting on airplanes and walking long distances can take a toll on the back and spine.
There are a few simple techniques to make sure your next journey doesn’t become a pain in the back.
-Plan how much you are going to pack carefully. Don’t over fill your luggage.
– Purchase a weight scale from your local luggage store. This will tell you exactly how much you are carrying on board. It will also help prevent fees for overweight luggage.
-Take a break. The airport is filled with coffee shops, rest areas and lounges. Take a moment to give your back a rest.
– Lift with your knees. Never drag or yank your luggage around. This is a sure way to cause serious pain or injury.
– Use a porter or cart. Don’t lift or pull your luggage if you don’t have to. Use the porter service or carts available at the airport to move move your luggage from one end to the other.
On The Plane
– Choose your seat wisely. Pick a seat in an area where you can stretch out your legs if possible. The emergency exit is an idea location.
– Get up and move. Long flights can take a toll on our legs, back and spine. When the seatbelt light goes off, stand up and stretch.
– Bring a pillow. A comfortable and sturdy pillow for your neck and back will prevent strains and pulls when you nap.
– Take a break. We often find ourselves doing more walking and carrying shopping bags when we are on holiday. Stop at a cafe, take a nap at the hotel or enjoy the view from a park bench so your back can have a rest.
– Know Your Limits. We often take on challenges we would never do normally when we are on holiday such as climbing large hills, walking for long distances or taking part in local activities we aren’t used to. Don’t do more than you can handle to ensure your entire holiday is a pleasant experience.
– Document everything. Keep a journal of your trip so if you are injured, you will know exactly how and why.
