This is a slide we happened across is some of the ancient chiropractic stuff we have around the clinic. Aside from being mildly hilarious, which initially drew me to this little item, this slide makes a valid point. It’s about all or nothing. If you had a choice, there is no sense in being “not stupid”, obviously we would want to be intelligent. This slide’s statement is referring to our health, asking if you would rather be healthy or just not sick? I think we would all answer, “we want to be healthy!” Being healthy may feel the same as ‘just not sick’, but is it the same? The latter scenario can actually be a road leading to health issues, issues that manifest over time , into real health concerns.
Let’s think of a healthy state as an original photograph (maybe one made from the slide I hold in my hand), and ‘just not sick’ as a photocopy of the original, any differences being subtle. You can tell which one is a copy, noting some of its tiny imperfections. If we continue to copy the latest copy and not the original, we would continue to distort the picture of health that we are attempting to achieve. Slowly over time, with each copy, the flaws would become more and more noticeable. Eventually you just cannot deny how far the reproduction has strayed from the original. We can liken this process to what we think about being ‘just not sick’. The changes may be subtle at first but you still believe yourself to be healthy, however, overtime without intervention the symptoms compound until there is an unwellness or disease.
We see this often in our patients. Patients who come in regularly may have some hiccups, but are on the mend within a few visits. Patients who are new to us, or may have taken a break from treatment can be the most difficult cases when it comes to seeing progress. There is often much more damage to undo, and the road to recovery can be a long and painful journey. It is important to take advantage of your health, and work hard to maintain it. It is our only real life insurance. So let’s be the intelligent folks and be proactive and healthy today, paving a smooth road ahead for us to journey on.
