Understanding Sleep Cycles for Better Health:
By Oakville Chiropractor Dr. Steve Knighton
Sleep is a very important part of our lives and is very important for your health. Majority of adults do not get enough sleep a night. Research suggests that an average adult should have about 7.5 – 9 hours of sleep every night. Sleep mainly consists of two parts or cycles. The cycles are called the deep sleep cycle and the REM sleep. In basic terms the deep sleep cycle is when your body rests and heals, this helps relieve pains and other body issues that have caused issues and it helps you feel energized for the next day. The REM sleep cycle is when the brain rests and heals. Both these cycles are very important but it requires proper sleeping hours so our body can get enough time for both cycles for as long as possible. The best way to go about it is that you fix your sleep schedule, sleep early or sleep in late. Make time for your sleep. To help with this as mentioned in the video the best way to do it is to sleep in a dark comfortable room and avoid caffeine after a certain time in the day as it interferes with sleep. It is also recommended that an hour before your sleep you stay away from your electronic devices as the colors from your phone signals your brain to stay awake. And as mentioned in our video about water consumption have a glass of water after walking up.
Another important thing to understand about sleep is good sleeping positions. You can learn more about that from our blog about sleeping positions.
