Lateral Ankle Sprain
4 days after a moderate to severe ankle sprain, Oakville Chiropractor Dr. Steve Knighton is back to his lovely self. A little slow on the walk around the clinic, but nonetheless, his bedside manner is back. The Chiropractic Oakville Doctor taking his own advice. Much like most of our patients, Steve couldn’t take time off of work due to an injury. His Up3 said that he walked 8500 steps Monday, 11000 steps Tuesday and 4500 on his half day on Wednesday. How is this possible you say…he took his own advice, the same advice he has been dishing out to patients for the last ten years…..Ankle Sprains Oakville……….
Dr. Steve only wears Asics Resolution tennis shoes at the clinic. Theses supportive shoes help immensely with his low back pain and his 3 herniated discs. When not at work Dr. Steve wears custom orthotics in his dress shoes, hockey skates and cycling shoes to help with his “old man” feet. Think you might have feet like Dr. Steve? 1. Ice the sprained ankle
when you are not moving you’re icing, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, 20 on…when you’re not icing you’re elevating for that 20 minutes !
2. Elevation – lift the sprained ankle
don’t have time to ice, lie on the floor with your foot up the wall. He did this 10 – 20 times over the last three days in between patient visits. If can’t do this because you think it looks weird, high school called they wanted you back.
3. Shoes to prevent and help sprained ankles
– wear supportive running shoes. Asics GT2000 Done. Squeeze your foot into the shoe and go about your day !
4. Interferential Current Treatment for swollen ankles
this is where a great therapist comes in. No Ultrasound, no laser, just an IFC glued to your foot, jacked up as high as you can take it.
5. Shockwave Therapy and Adjustments for Ankle Injuries
Almost all ankle injuries will get shockwave at our Oakville clinic. Shockwave therapy is air powered gun that hits a “bullet” against the injured area up to 15 times a second for 1200-1500 hits. After the shockwave Dr. Steve will get you to lie faceup on the table and adjust your ankle. Ankle adjusting is an art and a science. Dr. Steve will get you to hold yourself locked in place on the table then pull your ankle straight down/out. If the ankle moves, you will feel immediate relief when you stand up. Resetting the ankle joint allows for a “cleaner” range of motion and the start of proper biomechanics. This allows that ankle to heal!
5. Local swelling massage and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Therapy for ankle sprains
In most cases Dr. Steve will use his thumbs and some ankle mobilizations to help with the swelling. He also uses his “scrapers” to loosen up the tissue to allow the ankle adjustment to hold. We are not going to lie, this kills, we are not joking, but you want to pull that fluid out of your foot and back into your system. The sooner we get the ankle moving properly again the sooner it begins to heal!
6. Active rest for Ankle injuries
walk, if you can walk, if it’s not broken walk. Walking will increase the muscle pump from your calves, getting all that toxic fluid out from around the ankle. Walking allows new/fresh blood in the area and helps increases the healing process.
7. Ice…………………………..your sprained ankle
First and foremost, make sure there is no fracture in your foot !
