Headache Treatment Oakville

How We Assess Headaches In Oakville

Doctor Steve Knighton has treated patients with headaches at our Oakville clinic for nearly 20 years. Headaches can be connected to the neck, tight muscles, jaw tension or long hours at a desk. The first step is finding out what is contributing to your headaches.

Our chiropractors assess how your neck moves, where the muscles are tender, whether your jaw is involved and what tends to bring the headaches on. Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex then build treatment around what they find.

Headache treatments includes suction-style IFC, shockwave therapy, hands-on muscle treatment, chiropractic adjustments and exercises. Dr. Jenn also offers acupuncture in Oakville for appropriate patients.

If neck pain is part of the picture, read more about our neck pain treatment. If clenching or jaw pain comes with your headaches, see our TMJ and jaw pain treatment.

How We Treat Headaches at Our Oakville Clinic

Doctor Steve’s headache treatment starts with an assessment. A headache linked to restricted neck movement needs a different approach from one connected to jaw tension, and neither should automatically be treated like a migraine. Once our chiropractors identify the areas contributing to the problem, treatment can follow these four steps. Each step is used when it fits the patient’s examination.

4 Steps for Treating Headaches at our Oakville Clinic

Step 1. Interferential Current Therapy Headaches (IFC):

Tight muscles through the neck and upper shoulders often need attention before hands-on treatment.

Our chiropractors use therapeutic heat and suction-style interferential current therapy, or IFC, to help settle the area and make treatment more comfortable.

The suction cups are a regular part of how our clinic delivers IFC. Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex focus treatment on the muscles that are actually involved rather than putting pads in the same place for every headache patient.

The vacuum style suction IFC has 4 electrodes and feels like a deep massage. The heat combined with the IFC helps get the blood pumping and loosens up tight neck and upper back muscles.

Step 2. Shockwave Therapy for Headache Treatment

Shockwave therapy delivers short, repeated pressure pulses through a handheld applicator.

Our chiropractors move it over tight, tender muscles—often through the upper shoulders, along the neck or between the shoulder blades—when those areas are contributing to a patient’s headaches.

It is a focused treatment for the involved tissue, rather than a treatment applied to the head itself.
Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex adjust the location and intensity to the patient.

Shockwave is included in our chiropractic visits when appropriate, alongside IFC, hands-on muscle work and treatment of restricted neck joints. The goal is to reduce the muscle tension found during the assessment and help patients move more comfortably.

Step 3. Active Release and Trigger Point Therapy for Headaches

Our chiropractors work directly on the tight muscles contributing to a patient’s symptoms. That can include the upper trapezius, muscles at the base of the skull and, when relevant, muscles associated with jaw tension.

Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn or Dr. Alex may use Active Release Techniques and other hands-on methods to improve how those tissues move. Patients also get a clear explanation of which areas are being treated and why.

They dig deep into the trigger points that are causing the patients headaches and help release the tissue to improve range of motion and the biomechanics of the neck.

Step 4. Chiropractic Cervical Spine Adjustment for Headaches Oakville:

When the assessment shows that restricted neck joints are contributing to a patient’s headaches, our chiropractors treat those joints as well as the surrounding muscles.

Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn or Dr. Alex may use a cervical spine adjustment when appropriate for the patient. They can also recommend simple exercises to help maintain comfortable neck movement between visits.

The adjustment is one part of the treatment plan. Our chiropractors first check neck movement, muscle tension, symptoms and patient history, then choose the treatment that fits.

For patients whose headaches are linked to neck dysfunction, such as a Cervicogenic Headache, addressing both the joints and muscles gives the care a clear purpose.

 Cervical Spine Anatomy for Headaches

If you are diagnosed with a headache that is coming from your cervical spine(Cervicogenic Headache) our chiropractors have an entire protocol built for you.

Once treatment has started you will most likely be advised to limit your screen time, increase your physical activity, and start using a cervical wedge.

The Cervical Wedge can be used daily for up to 10 minutes at a time. We recommend these cervical wedges from Amazon. T

o use the wedge, follow the instructions on the box, but its as easy as lying on the floor, placing the wedge behind your cervical column , and playing on your phone. We usually recommend starting at a minute a two and working your way up to 10 minutes a day.

Check out our neck pain treatment protocol.

What Types of Headaches Do We Treat in Oakville?

Tension-Type Headaches

Tension-type headaches are often described as pressing or tight and can affect both sides of the head. Neck or shoulder tenderness can occur alongside them. I assess the symptoms and movement together instead of assuming posture is the only cause. Read more about our tension headache treatment approach.

Migraine Headaches in Oakville

Migraine is a neurological headache disorder, not just a tight neck. Attacks can include head pain, nausea and sensitivity to light or sound, and symptoms differ from person to person. Neck tightness can occur alongside migraine, but that doesn’t prove the neck is the cause. I assess related neck or jaw symptoms and explain where chiropractic care fits alongside your broader migraine care. Read about our chiropractic approach to migraines or Dr. Jenn’s acupuncture approach to migraines in Oakville.

Headaches and Jaw Pain

Jaw clenching, painful chewing, clicking or restricted opening can occur alongside headaches. I assess jaw movement and the surrounding muscles when those symptoms are present. Learn more about our TMJ and jaw pain treatment in Oakville.

Acupuncture for Tension Headaches in Oakville

A female patient receiving acupuncture for Headaches

Dr. Jenn Garven provides Contemporary Medical Acupuncture for selected patients with tension headaches and headaches associated with tight muscles through the neck, shoulders and upper cervical region.

Dr. Jenn first assesses where the headache appears to be coming from rather than treating every headache with the same acupuncture points.

Depending on the examination, acupuncture may be directed toward selected muscles of the neck, upper shoulders and base of the skull. Gentle electrical stimulation may also be used with selected needles when appropriate.

Acupuncture is one treatment option within our broader headache treatment program. Depending on the patient, care can also include suction-style IFC, Shockwave Therapy, soft-tissue treatment, chiropractic treatment and exercises designed to address the underlying mechanical problem.

Patients interested specifically in acupuncture can learn more about our Acupuncture in Oakville program, meet Dr. Jenn Garven, or read our Oakville Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions.

Are Your Headaches Coming From Your Computer or Desk Setup?

In today’s digital world, many headaches are related to long hours spent sitting at a computer. At our Oakville clinic, our chiropractic team frequently sees patients who have been dealing with persistent headaches for months or even years before realizing that their daily posture at the computer may be a major contributing factor.

This is trademark TEXT NECK! Poor workstation setup and prolonged forward head posture can place significant stress on the muscles and joints of the cervical column and upper back, which can eventually lead to chronic tension headaches.

When your head moves forward while working at a computer or looking down at a screen, the muscles at the base of the skull and the upper cervical spine must work much harder to support the weight of the head.

Over time this constant strain can irritate the cervical spine, tighten surrounding muscles, and contribute to headaches that often start at the back of the head and spread toward the temples or forehead.

At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre in Oakville, Dr. Steve often begins treatment by evaluating posture and workstation habits to determine whether computer use is contributing to a patient’s headaches.

Ergonomic advice is an important first step. Small changes to monitor height, chair positioning, keyboard placement, and sitting posture can significantly reduce the strain placed on the upper cervical spine and upper back throughout the day.

Sleeping position could play a major factor on why the patient is not healing and why they continue to have headaches!

After treatment begins, patients are often guided through simple “text neck” posture exercises and shoulder stabilization programs to help retrain healthy posture and support long-term improvement.

Oakville Headache Treatment FAQs

Can headaches come from the neck?

Yes. A headache that starts near the base of the skull, occurs with neck stiffness or changes when you move your neck can have a neck-related component. Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex check neck movement, joint restriction and tender muscles before deciding whether neck pain treatment belongs in the plan. Neck pain can also occur with migraine, so an assessment matters.

How do I know if I have a tension headache or a migraine?

A tension-type headache often feels like pressure or a tight band around the head. Migraine is a neurological condition that can involve moderate to severe pain, nausea, light or sound sensitivity, and sometimes visual symptoms. The two can overlap, and pain location alone does not settle the question. Our chiropractors ask about the full pattern before treating the neck or surrounding muscles.

What is a cervicogenic headache?

A cervicogenic headache is head pain referred from a problem in the neck. Patients often notice neck stiffness, reduced movement or pain that starts around the back of the head. Doctor Steve examines how the neck moves and whether specific movements reproduce the familiar headache. If the findings fit, treatment focuses on the involved neck joints and muscles rather than the head alone.

Can clenching my jaw cause headaches?

Yes. Jaw clenching and tight muscles around the temples can contribute to some headache patterns. Our chiropractors check jaw movement, tenderness and whether chewing or waking up with a sore jaw is part of the problem. Doctor Steve also assesses the neck because jaw and neck symptoms often occur together. Read more about our TMJ and jaw pain treatment.

Can sitting at a computer all day cause headaches?

Long periods at a desk can aggravate neck and upper-shoulder tension in some patients. Doctor Steve checks neck movement and asks about screen time, workstation setup and when headaches tend to appear. Treatment can address the painful areas, while practical changes to movement and desk habits help reduce the strain that builds during the day. Our text neck and posture page explains this in more detail.

What does a chiropractor do for headaches?

First, our chiropractors work out what type of headache the patient may be experiencing and whether the neck, jaw or surrounding muscles are involved. When chiropractic treatment fits the findings, Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn or Dr. Alex can use suction-style IFC, shockwave therapy, hands-on muscle treatment, appropriate neck adjustments and exercises. Patients are not given the same four steps automatically; the assessment determines what gets used.

Does every headache patient need a neck adjustment?

No. An adjustment is considered when the examination finds neck joint restriction that is relevant to the symptoms and the patient is an appropriate candidate. Some patients need more emphasis on muscle treatment, jaw care or exercises. Others need medical assessment instead. Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex explain their findings and the proposed treatment before starting.

Is shockwave therapy used for headaches?

Our chiropractors use shockwave therapy on selected tight, tender muscles around the neck and upper shoulders when those tissues appear to be contributing to the headache pattern. It delivers repeated pressure pulses through a handheld applicator; it is not applied to the head. Shockwave is one part of the clinic’s broader treatment approach, alongside IFC, hands-on care and appropriate neck treatment. Learn more about shockwave therapy.

Can physiotherapy help with headaches?

Physiotherapy can be useful when neck movement, strength or sustained desk posture is part of the problem. Vinaya assesses those findings and can build a rehabilitation program around movement, exercises and hands-on treatment. Doctor Steve and the chiropractic team can also identify when physiotherapy in Oakville would be a good fit for a patient’s care.

Do you offer acupuncture for headaches?

Yes. Dr. Jenn offers contemporary medical acupuncture for selected patients with headache-related muscle tension and for some patients managing migraine. She reviews the headache pattern and examines the neck and surrounding muscles before choosing treatment areas. Acupuncture can be used alongside other appropriate care. Patients interested in this approach can read about acupuncture in Oakville and Dr. Jenn’s migraine acupuncture treatment.

How often is too often to have headaches?

There is no useful rule that says one or two headaches a week is automatically fine. A new pattern, headaches becoming more frequent, headaches interfering with daily life or increasing reliance on pain medication are good reasons to speak with a healthcare professional. Keeping track of when headaches occur, how long they last and any accompanying symptoms gives Doctor Steve and your medical provider better information to work with.

When should a headache be treated as an emergency?

Call 911 for a sudden, extremely severe headache, especially if it comes with weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion, loss of vision or difficulty walking. A severe headache with fever and a stiff neck, or a headache after a significant head injury, also needs urgent medical attention. Those symptoms need emergency assessment, not a chiropractic appointment.

Do you see headache patients from Burlington, Milton and Mississauga?

Yes. Our clinic is in Glen Abbey, Oakville, and patients visit us from Burlington, Milton and Mississauga for headache assessments. Doctor Steve, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Alex offer chiropractic care in private treatment rooms, including evening appointments and Saturday chiropractic hours. New patients can contact the clinic or call 905-827-4197 to ask about availability.
