Sports Injury Physiotherapy for Athletes and Active People

You do not need to be a professional athlete to need sports physiotherapy.

We treat competitive athletes, recreational athletes, runners, gym members, weekend warriors and people who simply want to remain active.

Sports injuries can happen suddenly after a fall, collision, twist or awkward movement. They can also develop gradually from running, repetitive training, increased workout volume or continuing to play through an irritated muscle, tendon or joint.

Whether your goal is returning to soccer, hockey, running, pickleball, golf, basketball, baseball, the gym or simply exercising without pain, rehabilitation should be built around what you actually need your body to do.

That is the difference between simply getting an injury to feel better and preparing it to tolerate activity again.

Meet Your Oakville Sports Physiotherapist

Vinaya Chitgopkar has worked as a physiotherapist for more than 26 years in hospital, rehabilitation and private clinical settings.

She has extensive experience assessing and treating musculoskeletal injuries and particularly enjoys working with active adults, weekend warriors, overuse injuries and youth athletes.

Vinaya’s approach combines hands-on physiotherapy with progressive rehabilitation. Rather than simply giving you an exercise sheet and sending you home, treatment is adjusted according to your injury, pain level, movement, strength and activity goals.

For athletes with recurring back, hip or glute symptoms, the assessment checks how the lumbar spine, pelvis and hip move during sport-specific tasks. Vinaya’s physiotherapy team builds rehabilitation around the findings, while Doctor Steve and Doctor Alex assess the back and surrounding muscles, including the QL and gluteal region. Sports Injuries We Treat in Oakville

Sports physiotherapy can help with both sudden injuries and repetitive overuse problems.

Knee Injuries

Knee pain is extremely common in running, soccer, hockey, basketball, skiing, weight training and other activities involving jumping, pivoting or repetitive loading.

Our physiotherapy team assesses problems including ligament sprains, meniscus injuries, patellofemoral pain, tendon injuries and other causes of sports-related knee pain.

We also see many younger athletes dealing with Osgood-Schlatter pain around the front of the knee.

Ankle Sprains and Ankle Instability

Rolling an ankle is one of the most common sports injuries.

The goal of rehabilitation is not simply waiting until the swelling disappears. An injured ankle needs to regain movement, strength, balance and stability before it is expected to handle running, jumping and rapid changes of direction again.

Shoulder and Rotator Cuff Injuries

Throwing sports, racquet sports, swimming, weight training and repetitive overhead activity can all irritate the shoulder.

Physiotherapy can address shoulder mobility, rotator cuff strength, shoulder-blade control and the gradual return to overhead loading.

Tennis Elbow and Elbow Pain

Despite the name, you do not need to play tennis to develop tennis elbow.

Golf, pickleball, racquet sports, weight training and repetitive gripping can all overload the tendons around the elbow.

Wrist and TFCC Injuries

Golf, racquet sports, cycling, weight training and falls can place significant stress through the wrist.

Pain on the pinky side of the wrist can involve the triangular fibrocartilage complex, or TFCC, and requires a different rehabilitation approach than many other wrist conditions.

Running Injuries

Running places repeated load through the feet, ankles, calves, knees and hips.

Our Oakville physiotherapy team sees runners with shin splints, Achilles problems, knee pain, calf injuries, IT band symptoms and other overuse conditions.

What We Assess With a Sports Injury

Good sports physiotherapy starts with figuring out what is actually limiting you.

Your assessment can include:

  • How the injury occurred
  • Where your pain is located
  • Which movements reproduce your symptoms
  • Joint range of motion
  • Muscle strength
  • Balance and stability
  • Movement control
  • Previous injuries
  • Recent changes in training or activity
  • The physical demands of your sport
  • What you need to be able to do to return safely

The goal is to determine what needs to improve rather than applying the same treatment to every athlete with pain in the same area.

Our Sports Physiotherapy Approach

Phase 1: Reduce Pain and Settle the Injury

A fresh sports injury can be painful, swollen and reactive.

The first step is controlling irritation and modifying the movements or activities that continually aggravate the injured area.

Treatment during this stage can include hands-on therapy, gentle mobility work, activity modification and supportive treatments such as suction IFC when appropriate.

We do not want you doing aggressive rehabilitation exercises while every repetition is still producing significant pain.

Phase 2: Restore Movement and Control

Once the injury begins settling, the focus shifts toward restoring normal movement.

Restricted joint mobility, muscle tightness, poor movement control or compensations that developed after the injury can all interfere with recovery.

Treatment progresses according to what we find during your assessment.

Phase 3: Rebuild Strength and Capacity

Feeling better is not the same as being ready for sport.

As symptoms improve, rehabilitation becomes progressively more active.

Your program can include strengthening, resistance exercises, balance training, stability work and progressive loading designed to rebuild the capacity of the injured area.

The exercises become more demanding as your body becomes capable of doing more.

Hands-On Sports Physiotherapy Treatment

Exercise is an important part of sports rehabilitation, but it is not the only thing we do.

Depending on your assessment, treatment can include:

Manual Therapy
Hands-on treatment can be used to address restricted joints, muscles and soft tissues surrounding an injury.

Soft-Tissue Treatment
Tight or overloaded muscles often develop around an injured area. Hands-on soft-tissue treatment can be combined with your rehabilitation program.

Mobility and Joint Mobilization
Restricted movement can alter the way you run, lift, jump or perform your sport. Mobility work is used when improving range of motion is part of your treatment plan.

Progressive Strengthening
Rehabilitation exercises progress as your pain, movement and strength improve.

Balance and Stability Training
This is particularly important after ankle, knee and lower-extremity sports injuries.

Suction IFC
Our clinic uses suction-style Interferential Current Therapy rather than adhesive pads. IFC can be used for pain relief as part of your physiotherapy appointment when appropriate.

Shockwave Therapy
We have used radial shockwave therapy in our Oakville clinic for more than a decade. Shockwave can be included when appropriate for tendon, muscle and other soft-tissue problems.

There is no separate shockwave fee when it is used as part of your regular physiotherapy treatment.

Sports Physiotherapy Oakville FAQs

Do I need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy?

No physician referral is required to book a physiotherapy appointment at our Oakville clinic.

Some extended-health insurance plans have their own reimbursement requirements, so check your individual policy if you are unsure.

How much does sports physiotherapy cost?

Our initial physiotherapy assessment is $130.

Physiotherapy follow-up appointments are $80.

When Shockwave Therapy or suction IFC is clinically appropriate, it is included as part of the physiotherapy visit rather than charged as a separate treatment.

Is sports physiotherapy only for competitive athletes?

No.

We treat competitive athletes, youth athletes, runners, recreational athletes, gym members and active adults.

If an injury is preventing you from participating in the activity you enjoy, sports physiotherapy can be appropriate regardless of your competitive level.

Can I continue training while recovering from a sports injury?

Often you can continue some form of activity, but this depends on the injury.

Part of your physiotherapy plan is determining what you can safely continue, what needs to be temporarily modified and how activity should be increased as you recover.

How quickly can I return to my sport?

There is no single return-to-sport timeline that applies to every injury.

A mild muscle strain and a major ligament injury obviously require completely different rehabilitation plans.

We look at pain, movement, strength, stability, function and the demands of your particular activity before progressing you.

Do you use Shockwave Therapy for sports injuries?

Yes.

Our physiotherapy team uses Shockwave Therapy when the diagnosis and injured tissues make it appropriate.

It is commonly considered for stubborn tendon and soft-tissue problems rather than automatically being used for every sports injury.

Can physiotherapy help a recurring sports injury?

Recurring injuries deserve a proper assessment.

If the same ankle keeps rolling, the same knee hurts every time you increase running distance or the same shoulder flares whenever you return to the gym, we look at movement, strength, stability, load and other factors that could be contributing.

Do you offer physiotherapy for youth sports injuries?

Yes.

Our physiotherapy team treats youth athletes with musculoskeletal and overuse injuries.

Growing athletes can develop problems such as ankle sprains, knee pain and Osgood-Schlatter symptoms, and their rehabilitation should take their age, activity and stage of recovery into account.
