Chiropractic Care & Treatment Services
Chiropractic care at Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre starts with figuring out what is actually causing the problem and how it is affecting the way you move, work, exercise or get through your day.
At our Glen Abbey clinic in Oakville, treatment is built around the individual patient rather than giving everybody the same adjustment and sending them out the door.
Most visits begin with suction IFC and moist heat to relax the area and get it ready for treatment. From there, our chiropractors use chiropractic adjustments or joint mobilization, hands-on soft-tissue treatment, exercise and rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, IASTT scraping tools and acupuncture depending on the problem we are treating.
Our chiropractic team includes Dr. Steve Knighton, Dr. Alex Greyvenstein and Dr. Jenn Garven.
All three chiropractors have their own style and areas of experience, but the basic philosophy is the same: figure out the likely source of the problem, explain what we found, treat it properly and keep reassessing instead of doing the same thing over and over if it is not working.
BOOK A CHIROPRACTIC ASSESSMENT
Chiropractic Care Starts With the Right Assessment
Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, knee pain and other joint problems can have many different causes. Treating everybody the same way just because the pain happens to be in the same area does not make much sense.
A chiropractic assessment starts with how the problem began, what makes it better or worse, previous injuries, relevant health history and how the symptoms are affecting work, exercise, sleep or normal activity.
The physical examination is then based on what you are actually coming in for. This can include range-of-motion testing, orthopedic testing, neurological screening, strength testing, joint assessment and examination of the surrounding muscles and soft tissues.
Dr. Alex has a strong kinesiology and rehabilitation background and puts a lot of emphasis on movement, strength and what a patient needs to be able to do outside the clinic. Dr. Steve has been treating patients since 2008 and tends to explain things pretty simply: first figure out what is hurt, then decide what tools are going to give us the best chance of fixing it.
The findings are used to establish a diagnosis or clinical impression and determine whether chiropractic treatment is appropriate.
If something does not look like it belongs in a chiropractic office, we do not just keep treating it. When further medical investigation, diagnostic imaging or assessment by another healthcare professional is needed, we direct the patient to the appropriate next step.
What Our Chiropractic Patients Are Saying
What Does Chiropractic Treatment Include?
Chiropractic treatment at our Oakville clinic involves much more than one technique.
What we use depends on the diagnosis, examination findings, patient comfort, goals and how the problem responds to treatment.
Chiropractic Adjustments and Joint Mobilization
Chiropractic adjustments involve applying a controlled movement to a joint when an adjustment is appropriate for that patient and condition.
Not everybody needs the same style of adjustment. Some patients do better with lower-force techniques or joint mobilization, while others respond well to traditional chiropractic manipulation.
Dr. Steve, Dr. Alex and Dr. Jenn all adapt the technique to the patient instead of trying to make every patient fit the same treatment.
Treatment is explained before it is performed, and patients can always ask questions or discuss alternatives.
Soft Tissue Therapy
Muscles, tendons and other soft tissues are often part of the problem when someone is dealing with pain, stiffness or restricted movement.
Our chiropractors use hands-on muscle release, trigger-point treatment and instrument-assisted soft-tissue techniques throughout the clinic.
Dr. Steve has always been a big believer in actually working on the muscles around an injured joint instead of adjusting somebody and immediately sending them out the door.
Soft-tissue treatment is combined with the other parts of care that make sense for the injury, including adjustments, shockwave, rehabilitation or activity changes.
Exercise and Rehabilitation
Active rehabilitation is an important part of treating many musculoskeletal injuries.
Dr. Alex has a particularly strong background in kinesiology, sport and rehabilitation and regularly combines chiropractic treatment with mobility, strengthening and movement work.
Exercises focus on restoring mobility, strength, control and balance and helping patients return to activities that have become difficult because of pain or injury.
Home exercises are selected for the actual condition and the patient’s current ability. We do not hand every patient the same sheet of generic exercises just because they have back pain or shoulder pain.
The goal is to get people functioning better outside the clinic, not to make them dependent on coming into the clinic forever.
Interferential Current Therapy — IFC
Suction IFC is a standard part of our chiropractic treatment protocol and is usually the first thing we do when a patient comes in for care.
Think of it as the appetizer before the main treatment.
We use vacuum suction IFC with moist heat to help settle painful or guarded muscles and prepare the area for hands-on treatment.
Doctor Steve has used suction IFC for years and still prefers the older vacuum-style machines we have in the clinic. Patients regularly tell him that it feels more like a deep massage than the traditional sticky-pad electrical therapy they have had elsewhere.
After IFC, we move into the hands-on part of the appointment. That can include shockwave therapy, muscle release, IASTT, rehabilitation work or a chiropractic adjustment depending on what we are treating.
Patients genuinely enjoy this part of the visit, and IFC is included as part of the chiropractic appointment rather than billed as a separate treatment.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is.
Inside the handpiece, a small projectile is driven through a tube and strikes the treatment head, creating repeated pressure waves that are directed into the area being treated. Different heads and settings are used depending on the tissue, depth and sensitivity of the injury.
Doctor Steve uses shockwave regularly for stubborn tendon and soft-tissue injuries.
Some of the conditions we commonly use shockwave for include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon problems, tennis elbow and selected shoulder tendon injuries.
A surprising number of patients now come into the clinic specifically asking for shockwave because they read about it on the website or heard about it from another patient. If the examination shows that shockwave fits the problem, we use it as part of the treatment.
We do not charge an additional shockwave fee during a chiropractic visit.
A chiropractic appointment is $75, and when shockwave is part of the treatment being provided, it is included. We would rather have the different treatment tools available and use what the injury needs than start adding another charge every time we pick up a different piece of equipment.
Acupuncture
Dr. Jenn Garven provides acupuncture as part of her chiropractic practice.
She combines acupuncture with chiropractic care, soft-tissue treatment and rehabilitation depending on the condition she is treating and the individual patient.

IASTT — What Doctor Steve Calls the “Scraping Tools”
We use instrument-assisted soft-tissue treatment throughout the clinic, although Doctor Steve has never really called it that.
To him, they are just the scraping tools.
These tools are especially useful when we are working on stubborn tendon and soft-tissue problems in the arms and legs, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon problems, tennis elbow and other areas that feel thick, tight or restricted.
If you have ever had your plantar fascia scraped, you already know this is not exactly the relaxing part of the appointment.
Doctor Steve usually explains it to patients in simple terms: shockwave lets us work through the deeper area, while the scraping tools let us work more directly through tissue closer to the surface. When both make sense, we can approach the injured area in different ways rather than doing one thing and hoping for the best.
We use IASTT most often for arm and leg injuries, but it is also used around the shoulder and in selected neck and back problems.
Like everything else at Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre, we use it because it makes sense for the injury in front of us, not because every patient needs the same treatment.
Our Chiropractic Team
Dr. Steve Knighton, B.Sc., D.C.
Dr. Steve Knighton is the owner of Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre and has been providing chiropractic care since 2008.
His treatment style is hands-on and pretty straightforward. He starts by figuring out what he thinks is causing the problem and then uses the combination of chiropractic treatment, muscle work, suction IFC, shockwave, IASTT and rehabilitation that makes sense for that patient.
Patients frequently come into the clinic after reading one of Dr. Steve’s articles about a specific injury or treatment and ask for him directly. That is one of the reasons so much of the information on this website goes into detail about how we actually treat different conditions instead of giving generic advice.
Progress is reassessed throughout care. If something is working, we keep moving forward. If it is not working the way expected, the diagnosis and treatment approach need to be reconsidered.
Dr. Alex Greyvenstein, D.C.
Dr. Alex Greyvenstein is an Oakville native who has been part of the Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre team for approximately five years, first while training and now as one of our chiropractors.
He completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at McMaster University before earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.
Dr. Alex grew up playing competitive soccer, and that background carries over naturally into the way he treats sports injuries and active patients.
His approach combines chiropractic treatment with movement, active rehabilitation, strengthening and patient education, with the goal of getting people back to the activity that matters to them.
Dr. Jenn Garven, D.C.
Dr. Jenn Garven grew up in Glen Abbey and completed her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at Acadia University before graduating Magna Cum Laude from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.
She also completed training in Contemporary Medical Acupuncture at McMaster University.
Dr. Jenn combines chiropractic care, soft-tissue therapy, exercise and acupuncture in her practice depending on the condition and the patient.
Conditions Assessed by Our Chiropractic Team
Our chiropractors assess and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems involving the spine, joints, muscles and surrounding tissues.
Rather than trying to cram every condition into one massive service page, we have built separate resources explaining many of the problems we regularly see at the clinic.
If your symptoms started during sport or keep returning when you train, explore our sports chiropractic care in Oakville. Dr. Steve and Dr. Alex assess the injury, explain your treatment options and build a plan around the activity you want to return to.

What Happens at a Chiropractic Appointment?
Your first chiropractic appointment includes a health history, physical assessment and an explanation of what we found.
In many straightforward musculoskeletal cases, treatment begins during that same appointment after the assessment and informed consent are completed.
We know people generally do not book a chiropractor because they want to spend an hour talking about someday getting treated. If it is appropriate and safe to start care that day, we get started.
Follow-up appointments focus on treatment, monitoring changes in symptoms and function, progressing rehabilitation and deciding whether anything needs to be changed.
Do You Need an X-Ray Before Chiropractic Treatment?
No. Not every chiropractic patient needs an X-ray or other diagnostic imaging.
We do not routinely X-ray every new patient just because they walked through the door.
Imaging should be ordered when the history or examination gives us a reason to believe that the result will help with diagnosis, safety or management.
If Dr. Steve, Dr. Alex or Dr. Jenn finds something during the assessment that warrants imaging or further medical evaluation, they explain why and direct the patient to the appropriate next step.
How Is a Chiropractic Treatment Plan Decided?
There is no single treatment schedule that makes sense for every patient.
We do not believe everybody needs three visits a week for months simply because they walked into a chiropractic clinic.
Recommendations depend on the diagnosis, severity and duration of the problem, functional limitations, overall health, treatment goals and response to care.
Progress is reassessed as treatment continues.
When somebody is improving, the focus shifts toward increased activity, exercise and getting them back to normal function.
When somebody is not improving the way we expect, simply repeating the same treatment indefinitely is not the answer. We reassess the diagnosis, contributing factors and treatment approach and decide whether further investigation or referral is needed.
Chiropractic and Physiotherapy in the Same Clinic
Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre provides both chiropractic and physiotherapy in the same Oakville clinic.
Some patients need only chiropractic care. Others are better served with physiotherapy, or with both professions working together at different stages of recovery.
Because everybody is under the same roof, our chiropractors and physiotherapy team can communicate and coordinate treatment when that makes sense.
Direct Billing for Chiropractic Care
We offer direct billing to many extended health insurance providers when the patient’s individual plan allows it.
Coverage, deductibles and reimbursement amounts vary from one insurance plan to another, so patients are still responsible for confirming their individual coverage.
Our front desk team handles the direct billing process every day and can help answer questions about submitting a chiropractic visit.
Chiropractic Care for Veterans and CAF Members
Doctor Steve, Dr. Alex and Dr. Jenn welcome Canadian veterans and serving CAF members for chiropractic assessment and care. Our reception team checks the applicable benefits and required authorization before funded treatment begins. Find out how to book chiropractic care using VAC or CAF benefits.
Chiropractic Care FAQs
Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral?
No physician referral is normally required to see a chiropractor in Ontario.
Some extended health insurance plans have their own reimbursement rules, so it is worth checking your individual plan if you are unsure.
Does Everyone Need to Be Adjusted?
No.
Some patients are treated with chiropractic adjustments, while others are better suited to mobilization, soft-tissue treatment, rehabilitation or another approach.
The treatment should fit the patient, not the other way around.
Will I Receive Treatment During My First Appointment?
Usually, yes.
In many uncomplicated musculoskeletal cases, treatment begins during the first appointment after the assessment and informed consent are completed.
If the examination shows that imaging, medical assessment or another investigation is needed first, treatment is delayed or modified accordingly.
How Many Chiropractic Appointments Will I Need?
There is no predetermined number that applies to everyone.
It depends on the condition, how severe it is, how long it has been there, what you need to get back to doing and how your body responds to care.
We reassess progress rather than automatically putting every patient on the same long-term schedule.
Do You Use Shockwave During Chiropractic Appointments?
Yes.
We use shockwave therapy regularly for stubborn tendon and soft-tissue problems including plantar fasciitis, Achilles problems, tennis elbow and selected shoulder injuries.
If the examination shows that shockwave fits your injury, we use it as part of the chiropractic visit.
There is no separate shockwave charge during a chiropractic appointment.
Do You Use IFC During Chiropractic Appointments?
Yes.
Suction IFC with moist heat is a standard part of the way we treat many patients at Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre and is usually done before the hands-on portion of the appointment.
Do You Provide Rehabilitation Exercises?
Yes.
Exercises are used to improve mobility, strength, control, balance and tolerance for normal activity depending on the condition.
Dr. Alex has a particularly strong rehabilitation and kinesiology background, and exercise is an important part of his approach with active and sports-related patients.
Does Dr. Jenn Provide Acupuncture?
Yes.
Dr. Jenn Garven provides acupuncture and combines it with her chiropractic, soft-tissue and rehabilitation treatment when appropriate for the patient she is treating.
Do You Offer Direct Billing for Chiropractic Treatment?
Yes.
We directly bill many extended health insurance companies when the patient’s plan permits it.
Coverage varies by policy, so patients should confirm the details of their individual plan.

Evidence-Informed and Regulated Chiropractic Care
Chiropractors in Ontario are regulated healthcare professionals.
The College of Chiropractors of Ontario defines the chiropractic scope of practice and establishes standards relating to assessment, diagnosis, treatment, informed consent, communication and professional conduct.
Our approach is pretty simple: assess the problem properly, explain what we think is happening, use treatment that makes sense for that diagnosis, reassess progress and refer when something requires investigation or care outside our scope.
For conditions such as low back pain, contemporary clinical guidelines emphasize remaining active and incorporating exercise into management. Manual treatments including spinal manipulation, mobilization and soft-tissue therapy can form part of a broader treatment approach for appropriate patients.
