Sport is supposed to be the good part of your week. If your knee hurts every time you cut across the soccer field, your elbow complains after pickleball, or your back tightens halfway through hockey, get the problem assessed. At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre, Dr. Steve Knighton and Dr. Alex Greyvenstein provide chiropractic care in Oakville for sports injuries affecting active adults and young athletes.
Care combines hands-on muscle and joint treatment, rehabilitation and shockwave therapy when it fits the injury. Shockwave is included in your $75 chiropractic follow-up visit when clinically appropriate. Your initial chiropractic assessment is $130. Sports Injury Care With Dr. Steve and Dr. Alex
Dr. Steve Knighton brings a straightforward approach: work out what is injured, explain it properly and get to work on a plan. His care combines hands-on treatment with practical advice about the movements and activities aggravating the problem. The assessment includes the injured area and relevant surrounding joints and muscles.
Dr. Alex Greyvenstein grew up playing competitive soccer, including international youth tournaments, and holds a kinesiology degree from McMaster University. He understands the frustration of missing games and brings a strong interest in exercise and rehabilitation to his care. Both clinicians focus on getting you moving comfortably and building the strength and control your sport requires.
Shockwave, Hands-On Treatment and a Clear Rehab Plan
Shockwave therapy is an important option for stubborn tendon problems, including tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, plantar heel pain and selected patellar or shoulder tendon conditions. It delivers mechanical pressure waves to the treatment area and can help reduce pain and improve function in selected persistent conditions. The diagnosis matters: a sore tendon, a torn ligament and an irritated joint need different plans.
Doctor Steve uses shockwave alongside muscle release, instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy—IASTT—and joint treatment when indicated. Suction IFC is a standard preparation step at the clinic for suitable patients, helping settle discomfort before hands-on care. Adjustments or joint mobilizations are selected according to the examination, and exercises build the area’s tolerance for gripping, running, skating or swinging again.
There is no separate shockwave surcharge during your chiropractic visit. You get the combination of care appropriate for your injury, with progress reassessed along the way. For background on its use in persistent tendon conditions, see Homerton Healthcare’s patient information on shockwave therapy. Exercise and a sensible progression back to activity remain part of the plan.
Sports Injuries We Assess in Oakville
Soccer Knee Pain and Ankle Injuries
Knee pain after soccer deserves more than another week of hoping it disappears. Cutting, pivoting and repeated training can aggravate pain around the kneecap or patellar tendon, while a sudden twist needs assessment for ligament or meniscus injury. Pain behind the knee can also involve the popliteus muscle, particularly when pivoting or bending the knee from a straight position. The examination helps distinguish these problems. Our knee pain and ankle sprain pages explain the individual conditions in more detail.
If symptoms flare when you play on turf, tell us about the surface, your cleats and your weekly schedule. Bring your footwear if you can. We assess fit, support and wear alongside strength and movement, including what you wear between games. (For everyday footwear advice, see Doctor Steve’s supportive shoe recommendations for back pain and spinal stenosis. Sport shoes still need to suit the activity and playing surface.)
Pickleball Elbow, Wrist and Shoulder Pain
A paddle is light. A few hours of gripping, reaching and hitting still add up. Pickleball players can develop tennis elbow, forearm tendon pain and shoulder irritation, particularly when playing time increases quickly. Pain on the little-finger side of the wrist also needs a closer look; a TFCC injury is one possibility. Treatment follows the diagnosis, with attention to grip demands, shoulder strength and how much court time the irritated area can currently handle.
Hockey Back Pain and Hip Strain
Skating posture, hard acceleration and shooting put repeated demands on the back, hips and groin. If your lower back pain builds through a game or your hip hurts when pushing off, we assess the painful movement and relevant muscle and joint function. Care can include hands-on relief, mobility work and progressive strengthening for skating. A collision or fall changes the assessment and can require further medical investigation.
Golf Mid-Back, Rib and Hip Pain
If your back tightens by the ninth hole, tell us when it starts: address, backswing, impact or follow-through. Those details help guide the examination. We assess trunk rotation, the painful area and hip movement, then build treatment and exercise around the findings. Pain around the ribs or beside the shoulder blade during rotation also needs assessment; our rib subluxation and rib pain page explains that area in more detail. The plan addresses practice volume and your return to swinging, so the next step is clear when you leave the clinic.
Baseball Pitching and Throwing Injuries
Repeated throwing can irritate the shoulder and elbow, especially when workload climbs faster than the arm can tolerate. We assess shoulder pain, arm strength and the demands of throwing before recommending care. Young pitchers with elbow pain should stop throwing and get assessed because growing bones need particular attention. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains throwing injuries in children, including why playing through pain is a poor plan.

What Our Sports Injury Patients Are Saying:
What Happens at Your Sports Injury Appointment?
Bring the details: how it started, what makes it hurt, previous injuries and what you want to get back to. Steve or Alex examines the area, explains the findings and recommends treatment. When appropriate, care starts at that appointment. You also get guidance on what to continue, what to modify and how to progress.
Return to sport depends on the injury and your response to increasing activity. We look at movement, strength and sport demands as well as pain. If imaging, medical assessment or physiotherapy rehabilitation is the better next step, we explain why and help direct your care.
Sports Chiropractic Questions
Can I Keep Playing While Receiving Treatment?
Sometimes, with changes to playing time, intensity or specific movements. The answer depends on the injury and how it responds during and after activity. A swollen, unstable knee or worsening throwing pain needs a different approach from mild soreness that settles promptly.
Do You Treat Youth Sports Injuries?
Yes. Steve and Alex assess young athletes and adapt care to their age, stage of growth and injury. Parents are involved in the plan. Treatment choices, including whether shockwave is appropriate, require particular care around developing bones and growth plates.
Do I Need a Referral, and Is Direct Billing Available?
You can book a chiropractic assessment directly. The clinic offers direct insurance billing when your plan allows. Sports injury care provided by a chiropractor is billed under chiropractic benefits, and your coverage depends on your policy.
How Much Does Sports Chiropractic Treatment Cost in Oakville?
At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre, your initial chiropractic assessment is $130 and follow-up visits are $75. Shockwave therapy is included in the follow-up fee when it is appropriate for your injury, with no separate shockwave surcharge. Your appointment is built around the care you need. See our treatment fees and direct billing information for more details.
How Many Appointments Will I Need for a Sports Injury?
That depends on the injury, how long it has been bothering you and what you need to get back to. Steve or Alex recommends an initial plan after examining the problem, then reassesses your progress. We look at pain, movement, strength and how the area handles increasing activity. If progress stalls, we review the diagnosis and next steps rather than simply repeating the same treatment.
Does Sports Chiropractic Care Always Include a Spinal Adjustment?
No. An elbow, knee or ankle injury does not automatically require a spinal adjustment. Steve and Alex select treatment from the examination findings. Your care can include hands-on muscle treatment, joint mobilization, shockwave and rehabilitation exercises. When an adjustment is appropriate, the clinician explains it and discusses your options.
Do I Need to Be a Competitive Athlete to Book?
Absolutely not. Recreational pickleball, weekend golf, beer-league hockey and getting back into the gym are all valid reasons to come in. You do not need a team jersey or a tournament coming up. If pain is interfering with an activity you enjoy, Steve or Alex can assess it and explain your options for getting back to it.
