What Causes Wrist Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Wrist Pain?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, which is located in the wrist. When this happens, it can cause pain, tingling, numbness and/or burning in the wrist and hand. Using the fingers and hands will aggravate the symptoms.

In more advanced cases this condition can cause weakness in the hand (especially on the thumb side), clumsiness with the hands or even muscle wasting over the thumb.

Evidence Based Wrist Pain Treatment:

Don’t let wrist pain become chronic—early treatment makes carpal tunnel much easier to manage.

At our Oakville clinic, carpal tunnel treatment follows a similar approach to wrist and arm injuries. Patients start with Suction IFC and a heat pack to boost blood flow and reduce inflammation. Next, shockwave therapy targets the carpal tunnel area.  Shockwave is the gold standard for carpal tunnel treatment!

The latest research highlights the importance of ergonomic adjustments combined with Shockwave Therapy—the gold standard for treating carpal tunnel. This cutting-edge therapy promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and helps restore pain-free movement. See Shockwave Efficacy Study Here.

4 Steps to Treating Carpal Tunnel in Oakville

1. IFC Treatment for Carpal Tunnel and Wrist Pain

A person receiving treatment for Carpal Tunnel

Interferential Current Therapy (IFC) is often one of the first treatments used at our Oakville clinic when addressing carpal tunnel syndrome. This therapy is commonly combined with moist heat to help increase blood flow and reduce swelling within the wrist and hand. Improving circulation in the affected area can help reduce pressure on the median nerve, which is the nerve most commonly involved in carpal tunnel syndrome.

IFC therapy works by delivering a gentle electrical stimulation through small suction cup electrodes placed around the wrist and forearm. These electrical currents penetrate deeper into the tissues compared to many traditional electrical stimulation therapies. The goal is to help decrease inflammation, relax tight muscles in the forearm, and promote improved circulation in the structures surrounding the carpal tunnel.

At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre in Oakville, IFC therapy is often used as the first step in our evidence based treatment protocol for carpal tunnel syndrome. By helping reduce swelling and irritation early in treatment, IFC prepares the tissues for additional therapies that may include soft tissue treatment, nerve mobility work, and rehabilitation exercises designed to improve wrist and hand function.

Many patients experiencing carpal tunnel symptoms report numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain in the hand and fingers. These symptoms often develop from repetitive strain, prolonged computer use, workplace tasks, or inflammation within the wrist. Early treatment can help prevent symptoms from worsening and improve overall hand function.

Our Oakville clinic regularly treats carpal tunnel patients from Burlington, Milton, and Mississauga who are searching for effective treatment for wrist and hand pain. By combining therapies such as IFC, soft tissue treatment, and rehabilitation exercises, our goal is to reduce pressure on the median nerve and restore normal movement and function in the wrist and hand.

2. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Treatment For Wrist Pain

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Therapy (IASTT), commonly called “scraping,” is commonly used at our Oakville physiotherapy and chiropractic clinic as part of our treatment approach for carpal tunnel syndrome. This therapy is often performed either before or after shockwave therapy depending on the patient’s condition and level of irritation in the wrist and forearm.

IASTT uses specialized treatment instruments that glide across the skin over the muscles and connective tissues of the wrist and forearm. These instruments help identify and treat areas of tightness, adhesions, and scar tissue that may be contributing to increased pressure within the carpal tunnel. By addressing these restricted tissues, treatment helps improve mobility and increase circulation in the affected area.

During treatment, our health professionals work carefully within the patient’s pain tolerance to achieve effective results while maintaining comfort. The goal of the scraping procedure is to break up superficial adhesions and scar tissue in the wrist and forearm that may contribute to irritation of the median nerve.

At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre in Oakville, IASTT is commonly combined with therapies such as interferential current therapy, shockwave therapy, and rehabilitation exercises as part of our evidence based treatment protocol for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Our Oakville clinic regularly treats patients with wrist and hand pain from Burlington, Milton, and Mississauga who are searching for effective treatment for carpal tunnel symptoms. By improving tissue mobility and reducing scar tissue, treatment focuses on relieving nerve pressure and restoring normal wrist and hand function.

3. Shockwave Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Oakville

shockwave therapy being used on a patients wrist

Shockwave therapy is the gold standard for treating carpal tunnel syndrome. It is scientifically proven to accelerate healing and relieve wrist pain more effectively than any other treatment available today. Whether you live in Oakville or are driving from Milton – Burlington – Mississauga we have the shockwave therapy treatment you need for your carpal tunnel!

Shockwave therapy is commonly used at our Oakville clinic as part of our treatment protocol for carpal tunnel syndrome. This therapy utilizes an air-powered device that delivers rapid acoustic pulses to the tissues of the wrist and forearm. The device can deliver up to 15 pulses per second, allowing treatment to target the irritated structures surrounding the carpal tunnel and the median nerve.

During treatment, the intensity of the shockwave therapy is typically adjusted between 0.3 BAR and 2.0 BAR depending on the patient’s pain tolerance and the severity of the condition. Our healthcare professionals carefully adjust the treatment level to ensure the therapy is both effective and comfortable for the patient.

Shockwave therapy works by stimulating the body’s natural healing response within damaged or irritated tissues. The acoustic pulses help break down unhealthy or chronically inflamed tissue while encouraging the body to increase circulation and develop new blood vessels in the treated area. This improved blood flow can help accelerate the healing process and reduce pressure around the median nerve that contributes to carpal tunnel symptoms.

At Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre in Oakville, shockwave therapy is often combined with other treatments such as interferential current therapy, soft tissue treatment, and rehabilitation exercises to provide a comprehensive approach to carpal tunnel treatment.

Our clinic in Oakville regularly treats patients with carpal tunnel symptoms from Burlington, Milton, and Mississauga who are searching for effective wrist and hand treatment near them.

4. Active Release for Carpal Tunnel and Wrist Pain

active release being performed on a patients wrist for carpal tunnel injury

he final step in many carpal tunnel treatments at our Oakville clinic involves muscle release therapy, commonly known as Active Release Therapy (ART). This important step focuses on improving mobility in the wrist and forearm while addressing the underlying muscle tension that can contribute to pressure on the median nerve.

Carpal tunnel symptoms often develop when the muscles of the forearm become tight or overworked from repetitive movements such as typing, gripping, or prolonged computer use. When these muscles tighten, they can increase tension through the wrist and contribute to irritation within the carpal tunnel.

During the Active Release Therapy portion of treatment, our healthcare professionals apply precise pressure to specific muscles surrounding the wrist, hand, thumb, and forearm. While maintaining this pressure, the wrist and hand are gently moved through controlled ranges of motion. This combination of pressure and movement helps break down deep scar tissue, reduce adhesions, and improve the normal sliding motion of the muscles and tendons that pass through the wrist.

By improving circulation and restoring flexibility to the surrounding tissues, ART can help reduce nerve irritation and improve overall wrist and hand function.

Our Oakville clinic regularly treats carpal tunnel patients from Burlington, Milton, and Mississauga who are searching for effective treatment for wrist and hand pain caused by repetitive strain or nerve compression.

Carpal Tunnel Sleeping Brace

The wrist brace does not have to be fancy or expensive. Typically we direct our patients to Amazon to find a simple brace that costs $12-$20. There is no need to spend more! Find a brace that has some rigid supports that will help keep your wrist in a neutral (straight) position overnight. Soft neoprene braces are not rigid enough for this condition, so make sure you look for something with enough support to prevent the wrists from bending at night!

Our chiropractors and physiotherapists will almost always recommend braces for work and/or sleeping. As mentioned above, this condition is caused by an abnormal compression of a nerve in the wrist.

Working at a computer for 8 hours a day, and resting the hands on the keyboard can be a very aggravating position for the wrist and can make symptoms worse. Additionally, sleeping in a curled up position with the wrists tucked inwards can also aggravate this condition.

Curling the hands/wrists inward puts even more compression on this nerve. Spending 6-8 hours sleeping in this position is detrimental to recovery and can slow down the healing process. For this reason, we recommend sleeping with a brace that will help keep your wrist in a neutral position! Learn more about carpal tunnel treatment.

Acupuncture For Carpal Tunnel Oakville

acupuncture needles in a patients hand and wrist

Dr. Jenn Garven provides Contemporary Medical Acupuncture for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist pain, numbness and tingling at our Oakville clinic.

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve becomes irritated or compressed as it passes through the wrist. Symptoms commonly include numbness, tingling, burning or pain in the thumb, index and middle fingers and, in more advanced cases, weakness of the hand.

Dr. Jenn uses an anatomy-based approach rather than following the same acupuncture protocol for every patient. Depending on the examination, acupuncture may be directed toward selected muscles and tissues of the forearm, wrist and hand that can contribute to muscular tension and irritation surrounding the median nerve.

Gentle electrical stimulation can also be used with selected acupuncture needles when appropriate. The goal is to decrease pain sensitivity, reduce muscular guarding and improve function of the wrist and forearm while the underlying causes of the nerve irritation are addressed.

Acupuncture is generally used as one part of our broader carpal tunnel treatment approach. Depending on the patient, treatment can also include suction-style IFC, Shockwave Therapy, soft tissue treatment, wrist bracing, ergonomic changes and rehabilitation exercises.

Patients interested specifically in acupuncture can learn more about our Acupuncture in Oakville program, meet Dr. Jenn Garven, or read our Oakville Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions.

Carpal Tunnel Treatment FAQS

1) What is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a nerve compression condition where the median nerve is squeezed as it passes through the wrist’s carpal tunnel, leading to pain, tingling, numbness, and in advanced cases weakness in the hand and fingers.

2) What are the most common symptoms of carpal tunnel?

Our Oakville team says symptoms of carpal tunnel include numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness. Most symptoms are felt in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Symptoms may gradually worsen and can wake people at night.

3) What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?

Pressure on the median nerve from repetitive hand motions, poor wrist posture, inflammation, swelling or fluid retention can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Underlying conditions like arthritis or diabetes can increase risk.  Typing, mouse use, gripping tools, driving and prolonged cell phone use are common triggers.   Dr. Steve Knighton says he most commonly sees carpal tunnel in patients who have the wrong computer setup and are using their devices too much.

4) What non-surgical treatments are effective for carpal tunnel?

Conservative options include wrist splints, ergonomic changes, physical therapy, manual therapy, shockwave therapy, acupuncture and lifestyle modifications. These can relieve symptoms and improve nerve function when started early. Shockwave is the gold standard for treating carpal tunnel and in most cases can allow the patient to avoid surgery.

5) Does shockwave therapy help with carpal tunnel syndrome?

Yes — Shockwave is the gold standard for carpal tunnel treatment. At our Oakville clinic, shockwave therapy is a key evidence-based modality shown to accelerate tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain more effectively than many traditional treatments alone. Both our chiropractic and physiotherapy team use shockwave therapy with a combination of other treatments and modalities to cure carpal tunnel and wrist pain.

6) When should I see a healthcare professional for carpal tunnel symptoms?

See a professional if symptoms persist for more than a few weeks, especially if there’s weakness or loss of hand function. Dr. Steve Knighton says early diagnosis helps prevent permanent nerve damage. The earlier the patient begins treatment the faster they heal!

7) Can ergonomic changes at work help carpal tunnel?

Yes — Ergonomics are super important for carpal tunnel healing and prevention. Properly set up computer work station is key! Optimizing keyboard height, improving wrist position, incorporating breaks from repetitive tasks, and proper posture can significantly reduce wrist strain and help reduce symptoms.

8) What role do wrist braces or splints play?

Wrist braces keep the wrist in a neutral position, especially at night or during aggravating activities, reducing nerve pressure and often improving symptoms. Icing and night splints can drastically improve carpal tunnel.

9) When do I have to wear my braces/splints?

Wearing splints at night is recommended to prevent the wrists from falling into positions that will further compress the median nerve and aggravate symptoms.  Mornings are often the worst time for symptoms because the wrist tends to bend during sleep, which is why splints are recommended to help keep the wrist in a neutral position.  If symptoms are severe, or if job/life requires repetitive use of the hands and wrists then it may be beneficial to wear the splint during those activities as well!

10) Is acupuncture helpful for carpal tunnel pain?

Yes! Dr. Jenn uses acupuncture to help reduce nerve irritation and inflammation around the wrist.  Acupuncture helps to improve circulation and dampen pain, making it a valuable adjunct to other therapies. At our Oakville clinic acupuncture treatment is performed by Dr. Jenn Garven and is billed under chiropractic for insurance purposes.

11) Can carpal tunnel syndrome go away on its own?

In early or mild cases, symptoms can sometimes improve with activity modification, splinting, and timed rest, but persistent symptoms typically need professional treatment.

12) When might surgery be necessary for carpal tunnel?

Carpal tunnel surgery (carpal tunnel release) is considered when symptoms are severe, progressive, or fail to improve with conservative care, particularly when there is ongoing weakness or loss of hand function. At our clinic, surgery is viewed as a last resort. Dr. Steve works closely with patients who may be considered surgical candidates to develop an evidence-based treatment plan aimed at reducing symptoms and improving nerve function before surgery is pursued. With over 20 years of clinical experience, outcomes following carpal tunnel surgery can be highly variable, which is why conservative treatment options are often explored first. Once surgery is performed, it is not reversible, making proper assessment and informed decision-making essential.
