Acupuncture for Jaw Pain, Jaw Tension & Clenching in Oakville

Dr. Jenn Garven provides acupuncture for jaw pain, jaw tension, clenching and painful jaw muscles at Nottinghill Family Wellness Centre in Oakville. Dr. Jenn completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program through McMaster University and commonly treats patients whose jaw muscles feel tight, sore or overworked.

A painful jaw does not always mean there is a problem inside the TMJ itself. Some patients have extremely tight masseter or temporalis muscles from clenching or grinding. Others wake up with both sides of the jaw aching, notice facial or temple tension throughout the day, or find that chewing and yawning make their jaw muscles increasingly sore.

Dr. Jenn examines the jaw and surrounding muscles first to determine what appears to be causing the pain and whether acupuncture makes sense for that particular patient.

Acupuncture for Tight and Painful Jaw Muscles

The masseter and temporalis are powerful muscles used every time you chew and clench your teeth. When these muscles remain overactive for long periods, they can become tender and painful and may contribute to jaw fatigue, temple pain and headaches.

This is particularly common in people who clench their teeth during the day or grind at night. Some patients know they clench because they catch themselves doing it. Others do not realize how much tension they carry in their jaw until the muscles are examined.

When jaw muscle pain is an important part of the problem, Dr. Jenn may use acupuncture at selected areas around the masseter, temporalis, face, head or neck based on the examination.

Research has specifically looked at acupuncture for myofascial pain involving the jaw muscles. A 2024 systematic review examined acupuncture for craniomandibular myofascial pain associated with temporomandibular disorders. Read the jaw muscle acupuncture research on PubMed.

Jaw Clenching, Teeth Grinding and Morning Jaw Pain

A very common story in our Oakville clinic is someone who wakes up with a tight or aching jaw. They may also notice sensitive chewing muscles, temple headaches or a feeling that they have been working their jaw all night.

Clenching and teeth grinding, also called bruxism, can place a tremendous amount of repeated load through the jaw muscles. Acupuncture does not stop every person from grinding their teeth, and Dr. Jenn does not present it as a cure for bruxism. The treatment is directed toward the painful and overactive muscles that may be associated with that clenching or grinding.

If a patient is damaging their teeth or clearly requires a nightguard, that is something that should be assessed by a dentist. Acupuncture can still be considered for the muscular pain occurring around the jaw.

How Dr. Jenn Uses Acupuncture for Jaw Pain

Dr. Jenn starts by looking at where the pain is located, how the jaw opens, which muscles are tender and whether symptoms are occurring on one side or both. She also asks about clenching, grinding, headaches and neck symptoms when they appear relevant.

Acupuncture treatment is then based on those findings rather than using the same collection of points for everybody.

Very thin needles may be placed into selected areas around the jaw, face, temples or neck. For patients with significant muscular jaw pain, the masseter and temporalis are often particularly important areas to assess.

Acupuncture may be used on its own or alongside other appropriate treatment when more than one factor is contributing to the patient’s symptoms.

Jaw Muscle Pain Versus TMJ Joint Pain

Jaw muscle pain and TMJ pain can occur together, but they are not exactly the same thing.

This page is primarily for patients whose main complaints are jaw tension, clenching, grinding, sore chewing muscles, masseter pain, facial tension or an aching jaw.

A patient whose major problem is pain directly over the TMJ, painful clicking or catching, locking, or difficulty opening the mouth normally may have a more joint-specific TMJ or TMD problem.

We have a separate page specifically for that condition: Acupuncture for TMJ Pain in Oakville.

Can Jaw Tension Contribute to Headaches?

It can.

The temporalis is both a chewing muscle and a muscle that covers a large portion of the side of the head. Patients who clench heavily may experience tenderness through the temples as well as the jaw.

Other patients have a combination of jaw tension and neck pain occurring at the same time. That does not mean every headache originates from the jaw, but it is one reason Dr. Jenn examines more than simply the exact spot where the patient says it hurts.

If headaches or migraines are the main problem rather than jaw pain, see our separate page on Acupuncture for Migraines in Oakville.

What Does Acupuncture Around the Jaw Feel Like?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and most patients tolerate treatment around the jaw well. A patient may feel very little when a needle is inserted or may briefly notice pressure, heaviness or a mild aching sensation in a tight muscle.

The number and location of needles depends on what Dr. Jenn finds during the assessment. There is no standard jaw-pain protocol that every patient receives.

How Many Treatments Are Needed for Jaw Pain?

There is no single treatment number that applies to every patient.

Someone with a recent episode of jaw muscle tightness is different from someone who has been clenching or grinding for years. Dr. Jenn monitors changes in pain, muscle tenderness and comfortable jaw movement as treatment continues.

If acupuncture is helping, that response helps guide whether treatment should continue. If a patient is not responding as expected, the diagnosis and treatment approach should be reconsidered rather than simply repeating the same treatment indefinitely.
